Émile “Butch” Bouchard, the oldest captain of the Montreal Canadiens, died Saturday following a long illness. He was 92 years old.

The host and sports analyst Ron Fournier, close to Mr. Bouchard, confirmed that he had passed away, surrounded by his family early Saturday morning.

Born in Montreal on September 4, 1919, Emile Bouchard did not intend them to a hockey career. After studying at the College Roussin, the young Emile wanted to work in banking or as a beekeeper.

An accomplished sportsman, he practiced baseball and boxing, but this is the age of 16 he began to indulge in hockey. After borrowing $ 35 to his brother Marcel to buy equipment, it puts them seriously and will be successful, especially with the Verdun Maple Leafs, the late Senior Provincial League.

The rugged defender of 6 feet 2 inches and 205 pounds quickly noted and the Montreal Canadiens offered him his first professional contract with their club to move to Providence (Rhode Island) in the American League. He will play 12 games in 1940-41.

In his first training camp before the 1941-42 season, Emile Bouchard travels by bicycle the 80 kilometers between his home in Montreal to the city of Saint-Hyacinthe, training site of the Canadian at the time, ensuring thereby not go unnoticed when he arrived. Bouchard has earned a position that year and spent the following 15 seasons with the club, becoming one of its pillars at the blue line.

During his 15 year career in the National Hockey League, Bouchard played 785 games, scoring 49 goals and adding 144 aid for 193 points. Robust player – but not aggressive -, Bouchard has also accumulated 863 minutes of penalties during his career.

Named captain before the 1948-49 season, he replaced Bill Durnan as team captain, a role he held for eight seasons before retiring after the 1955-56 season. He was replaced by Maurice `Rocket ‘Richard.

Bouchard played 113 games in career playoff wins and four Stanley Cups, in 1944, 1946, 1953 and 1956, the last two as captain. He scored 32 points (11-21) and amassed 121 minutes in penalties during these meetings.

“Butch” Bouchard was elected in the first team in the NHL in 1945, 1946 and 1947 and in the second in 1944. He was admitted to the Hall of Fame in 1966. Since 1975-76, the Junior Hockey League Quebec Major honors its best defender, handing him the Émile-Bouchard Trophy.

Astute businessman

In addition to a glorious career on the ice, Emile Bouchard has also been successful in business. From 1938 to 1950 he was a beekeeper. Its 1.2 million bees have produced up to 15,000 pounds of honey per year.

In 1948, he opened the restaurant Butch Bouchard, rue de Montigny – now de Maisonneuve Boulevard – and St. Andrew in downtown Montreal. The restaurant, open until 1983, also acted as a cabaret and some big names in music have performed there, including Charles Aznavour. He was the appointment of hockey fans as the elite of the time.

Bouchard was also able to combine business and sports, becoming in 1956 director of the Montreal Royals of the International League at the time farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Los Angeles starting in 1958. In 1957 he was promoted to president. The club played its final season in 1960.

Emile Bouchard was also very involved socially. It has, among other things, chaired the fundraising campaign to build the arena and Roussin’s College in 1961 and 1962, was alderman of the city of Longueuil. He also participated in the activities of the Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club of Longueuil, and sits on the boards of the National Palestra and the Sainte-Jeanne d’Arc of Montreal.

The “saga” of the jersey retired

As part of celebrations marking the centenary of the team, the Canadiens retired more numbers that belonged to the great players that have marked its history, with three of Emile Bouchard, with the facilitator and analyst Ron Fournier s’ was launched in a campaign to lather the candidacy of Mr. Bouchard and pushing the Canadiens to pay him this honor.

Calixte son of Regina and Lachapelle Bouchard, Émile Bouchard married the painter Marie-Claire Macbeth in 1946. The couple had five children: son Emile, veterinarian, Jean, a journalist, Michel, filmmaker, Peter, who played for the Canadiens from 1970-71 to 1977-78, and Marie-France, who works in the theater.

After being traded to Calgary, Michael Cammalleri ask at the time ,general manager Pierre Gauthier , if he could keep his sweater. Pierre Gauthier granted his request as long as the team got money for it.

Even if Cammalleri did so much for the Habs in the 2010-2011 playoffs, Gauthier wouldn’t just give him his jersey. What a shame. So $1,250 for the jersey wow what a rip-off.

Now the same jersey if half-off at the Canadiens online store for $109.99.

Who scored two goals and nine assists in 38 games this season, Scott Gomez does not know what the future holds. When he met with reporters, he reiterated that person for the time could not predict what happens next while claiming he wanted to stay with the Canadiens.

“I do not know what will happen. I can not really comment because I do not know what will happen. I think nobody can say what will happen. There will be changes, but I can not answer, I’m not part of management. ”

“I love the city and I hope to be back, said Gomez. Living the playoffs at the Bell Centre in recent years has been one of the greatest experiences I’ve had. ”

“He’s our teammate and we will be behind him, Josh Gorges said about Gomez. His stats are not up to his expectations, he will be the first to say, but it remains a great competitor. It has the same desire to win than others. ”

This is the first time in his career that Gomez starts his holidays as early, he has always seen its playoff teams since the start of his career. “It’s new to me and it’s disappointing. ”

“Injuries have hurt the club at training camp and it continued throughout the season. This is the story of our season, “said the enigmatic athlete who suffered a concussion late season.

The 2011-2012 season is over and here is an overview of all statistics on the Montreal Canadiens in comparison with those of the 2010-2011 season.

We know that the Canadiens finished 15th and last place in the Eastern Conference and 28th place overall, having collected 78 points, compared to 96 last year.

No doubt his record of 5-12 games in a shootout, and performance of 11-26 in games that ended with one goal difference, were important factors in this season of misery.

His performance on the power play was awful, finishing with an efficiency of only 14.29% in 28th place, while his special unit has been extraordinary, ending with an efficiency of 88.57%, the second best of the circuit.

Individually, we must emphasize the form of 35 goals from striker Erik Cole, which earned him a tie for 11th place in the NHL, while Max Pacioretty finished first on the team with a total of 65 points (including 33 goals) and also David Desharnais, who surprised with a production of 60 points, 44 assists, tops in the training.

Of note is the performance in defense of Josh Gorges, who blocked 250 shots, the highest total in the NHL, while rookie Alexei Emelin, author of 236 hits, finished tied for 14th place at this circuit chapter.

In goal, the goaltender Carey Price, who has participated in 65 games, has not been as effective in 2010-2011 because he had a record of 26-28-11 with a mean of 2.43, efficiency, 916 and four shutouts. He presented a yield of 38-28-6 (he finished in 1st place in the NHL in wins, with Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks), an average of 2.35 and an efficiency of, 923 and eight shutouts.

It will be interesting to follow all the actions that will be posed by the Montreal organization in the coming days and weeks ahead.

While 16 NHL teams are preparing for the first round of the playoffs, the Canadiens players have passed through the Bell Complex in Brossard on Monday to collect their belongings and meet one last time reporters before leaving for the offseason.

Goaltender Carey Price said he had begun discussing a contract with the former general manager Pierre Gauthier before his dismissal, but said that there was nothing concrete in the negotiations. “I’ll wait for an offer, but I want to play here for a long time. ”

Price likes to Montreal when the team wins. “It’s a great city to play hockey, the season was difficult because we had a bad year, but when you’re in a winner, there is no better place to play. ”

“This is probably the most important issue to address this summer, said Josh Gorges. It is the face of this franchise. We need him to win. I hope things go quickly and they will be easy for him. ”

Erik Cole also hopes that the goalkeeper shall consult with the Canadian. “It is very important and I do not see why it would not get the contract he deserves, Cole said. He gave us a chance to win every night. ”

Price, bothered by a concussion late in the campaign, said he felt better. “I had headaches for about a week before I say it. I thought I could still play, but things have not improved. That’s when we decided to go cautiously. ”

He said he still felt symptoms, but should be fully recovered for the next training camp in September.

Price found last season difficult, especially when served as guardian, because we put a lot of pressure on yourself. “I think I had a decent season, but I think I could have done better. I am convinced that many players think the same thing as me. ”

On another note, Price said it might need to undergo surgery to his right ankle.

Markov happy to finish in strength

Defenseman Andrei Markov said that he felt very well during the last parts of the country, who has played just 13 games this season following a knee surgery.

The Russian defender said he would continue his rehabilitation this summer to be more comfortable on the ice. “I will continue my fitness and hope to play better next year. I still have stiffness in my knee, but that’s normal. ”

The defender would not say it was the worst season he had known since his arrival in Montreal because he had hardly played the past two seasons. “It’s disappointing to have missed the playoffs, but it should be a lesson to do better next year. When we are all on the same page, you can beat any team in this league. ”

When he was asked to analyze the progression of PK Subban, Markov did not want to answer. “Next question,” he said.

“I guess it’s not easy to see a young player who comes and who has a sponsorship before he played his first NHL game, Subban replied later. At the same time, people chant my name. It’s not me who asked the crowd at the Bell Centre to do so. ”

Markov has not received an invitation to attend the World Championship and an invitation if he did he know if he would accept. “I have not spoken with anyone in the national team. ”

“This is probably the worst season I’ve known here, said Tomas Plekanec. Everyone needs a fresh start. ”

“It’s more difficult to develop a chemistry, Plekanec added about the many upheavals of this year’s trios. It would be nice to have linemates stable. I would like some regular wingers. The team would also benefit. ”

He is not convinced that the physical aspect is the one that made the difference this season. “When we reached the semi-finals a few years ago, we were not the biggest team, Plekanec said. We followed our game plan, we were quick and smart. That’s why we went that far. ”

Improvement to Subban

“It’s disappointing not to be getting ready for the playoffs,” said PK Subban, who will represent Canada at the World Championships.

“I had a good meeting with the coaches and I think I improved a lot and I have to keep learning. ”

“We have many young players on the team who has been asked a lot, said Subban. For a long time, I think we did well and this is encouraging for the future. Some of the younger players become leaders. ”

“I wish Andrei Markov plays again this season because you learn a lot watching him, said Subban. I’m glad he has returned to the game it will be an important asset for the team to rely on it in the first game next year. ”

Desharnais seized his chance

David Desharnais just experienced his first NHL season. It turned out the nicest surprise of the team, having been the author of 16 goals and 44 assists in 81 games, while managing to establish himself as the first player in the Canadian center.

“I hope that things will continue to go well for me next year, but as a team, it’s not pleasant to experience a season like the one we just experienced. Nobody wants to finish last and we must ensure that it never happens again. ”

Desharnais is aware that he took advantage of the many injuries that have plagued the team to earn a regular position. “It could have been otherwise if there had not been so injured. I could have spent the game in the bleachers or play on the third or fourth line. It could have been another story. I knew I could do the job, but you had the opportunity arises. ”

The captain is disappointed

Captain Brian Gionta is dissatisfied with the turn of the season the team. “It’s frustrating. Everyone is disappointed, it’s not a secret. At camp, we thought we could make the playoffs and compete to win the Stanley Cup. It is difficult to accept. ”

“I think the coaching staff has done a good job, said Gionta, absent from the game since Jan. 31 because of an injured arm. They were all placed in a difficult situation, which does not prevent them to work very hard. I think we should give them credit for everything they went through. Mr. Molson said he wanted everyone agrees not to seek that victory and I think we’re close to finding ourselves on the winning path. ”

A matter of pride for Darche

Mathieu Darche will be an unrestricted free agent July 1. A few days after the last part, the time has not yet come to talk contract.

“A new direction is coming and it is unclear what direction it will take. It’s beyond my control, so I did not break the head with it. I still have to give hockey and I hope to be back. ”

Originally from Montreal, Darche believes that the Canadian must regain the pride that characterized its glorious history. “We need to re-do attitude and not be satisfied with not only win two games in four. You really need that one is sorry to lose. We must not forget what we felt after the last game at home where it was felt to win a game, but to be eliminated anyway. This is the worst feeling to have. ”

The veteran of 12 seasons is still struggling to accept his team’s season. “It breaks my heart to see the Canadian in 15th place in the East. This is unacceptable. I do not want to be disrespectful to other organizations, but for the Canadiens in this position should never happen. ”

“We must build a team that is hard to beat. The Red Wings have had difficult years, but for about 20 years, they became the basis for comparison in the league. It is a dominant team and there is no excuse for that we are not at that level. ”

“We have a culture or half measures are not acceptable. We’re all in this together and it is the fault to everyone what happened. Do not accept being as extras. ”

No surgery for Weber

Yannick Weber will need at least a month to recover from a lower body injury. Fortunately for him, he will not have to go under the knife.

He sees the next season as an opportunity to prove he can still help the team, it was used both as an advocate and as a forward on occasion. He believes that all players will closely monitor future changes on the seventh floor. “It will be stressful for everyone. With new management, everyone starts over at the camp and it will be for me to impress the coaches. ”

“Like all players, I would have loved to play more, admitted the guard auxiliary Peter Budaj, who chose not to defend the colors of the Czech Republic at the World Championships. I thought I would play more games, but it was not my decision. The only thing I could control was my way of playing. ”

Rene Bourque has scored only five goals and three assists in 38 games since the Canadiens won the services of the Calgary Flames in exchange for Michael Cammalleri on January 12. The principal applicant has not taken a detour when he met reporters. “I had a bad season. I am a better player than I showed. There are still three years to my contract and I hope to stay here. ”

A concussion for White

Ryan White confirmed he had suffered a concussion during his fight against Erik Gudbranson of the Florida Panthers, March 27. He had not yet got the go-to return to play when the season ended. Following this injury, the young man did not intend to change his game in the future. “I’m not going to change my game because I’ve always played that way. ”

White, who totaled 63 games in the NHL since the beginning of his career, looks forward to return to her fall to the Canadiens. “I love playing in this city and for my teammates. I want to be back. This is where I want to be. I know there will be changes in the management, but I want to be back. ”

“Expectations were high and we have not reached our goal, said Travis Moen, who will be unrestricted free agent in July. We can not change it now. We must regroup for next season. ”

Moen said he enjoys playing in Montreal and he would be back here in September. He would not specify what type of contract he wanted. “I want to keep playing in the NHL. We have a good group of players and with some acquisitions, we can be a very good team. ”

“The season was difficult, but the experience will make me better, said the back Chris Campoli, whose contract has just ended. Playing in Montreal was special for me. There were some good moments, but also frustrating moments. I want to take the good times and build on it either here or elsewhere in the league. ”

The defender Raphael Diaz, bothered by a groin injury since late February, said it proved he could play in the NHL, but he is aware that new management will soon take over. “It will be a new season and it will go to waste. What we did this season will not matter. That is why I think it’s important to train hard this summer to return in force. ”

14.4% chance for Habs

The lottery to determine the order of selection of the next entry draft will take place tomorrow. The Canadian has presented the third worst record in the NHL and 14.4% of chances of getting the first choice. Only Columbus and Edmonton did worse than the Habs. The Canadiens finished the season Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, ending with a record of 31-35-16 and 78 points in the standings.
